Kaladin: a Stormlight Archive Album + Art Book

Created by The Black Piper

Kaladin is an epic fantasy, cinematic-style book soundtrack inspired by Brandon Sanderson's bestselling novel, The Way of Kings. Blending gritty styles that are heavily influenced by the epic music of Two Steps From Hell and Steve Jablonski (Transformers) with piercing beauty influenced by James Horner (Avatar) and Howard Shore (The Lord of the Rings), the album tells a tale of a harsh world where storms ravage the earth, spirits assist humanity, and hope, beauty, and honor exist as delicate wisps on the wind. The album connects with the imaginations of fans in an exciting way. It enhances the listener's experience of the story without getting in the way of their imagination, enabling them to picture their favorite moments in vivid detail. For those who haven't read the book, the music deftly captures the sting of betrayal, the horror of fighting a war on the front lines, the whispers of a spiritual awakening, and the strength of friendship so that the listener may become familiar with the story on a human level. The music invites all listeners to to join the magic of a world that needs heroes to stand and accept the call to unite.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

KALADIN Art Books - Digital, Physical, Wallpaper - Update
almost 3 years ago – Tue, Jul 27, 2021 at 05:15:27 AM

Hi all,

We hope you're doing well this week. We have a few small updates for you.

Digital Art Books

Just a quick message to all who purchased an art book (digital or physical) to let you know that you should have received an email from BackerKit with instructions on how to access your digital copy. If any of you have not received an email, first check your spam, and if you don't see it, please send us a message, and we'll get it sorted out! (You can either message us directly here on Kickstarter or email us at [email protected]).

Once you've had a chance to fully ingest the digital art book, we'd love to hear what you think of it! We're certainly grateful to all of the artists for all of their amazing and hard work!

Feel free to send us messages here or on social media, letting us - and the world - know your thoughts!

Digital Wallpapers

A separate email from BackerKit was sent out (this one to all of you!) with instructions on how to receive your bonus Digital Wallpaper of "We Won", courtesy of our friends at Cosmere.es. As with the digital art book, if you can't find your email, please message me, and I'll help you get it taken care of.

Physical Art Book Update

We are currently wrapping up the preparation of the files for printing and are working with the printer to get a physical proof of the art book before we go fully to print. We want to make sure that there will be no issues with the prints before placing the full order. We'll keep you in the loop with updates on the process.

That's all for now. Have a great week!

All the best,

Michael and Petar

Kaladin Album Art Book - Digital Release + BONUS for everyone
almost 3 years ago – Sat, Jul 10, 2021 at 10:27:49 PM

Hi all,

I hope you are all doing well! I have some fantastic news for you!

The Art Book Is Complete

At long last, the Kaladin album art book (expanded liner notes) has been completed and approved! We have received Dragonsteel's stamp of approval, and we are now preparing the digital files for release.

Digital Release

As promised, we are planning on giving a digital copy of the art book to all who ordered an art book (whether you ordered a physical or digital copy). It may take a few days to prepare the file, but we should have it to you by early next week! We will be sending it by way of BackerKit, so keep an eye out for an email from them.

Bonus Wallpaper (For All Of Our Kickstarter Backers)

We have one more surprise for you. Our friends Tamara and Ángel over at Cosmere.es have prepared a special bonus gift for all of our Kickstarter backers: you will all receive an animated wallpaper of "We Won" by Petar Penev! "We Won" was our first commissioned illustration for the art book, and we are excited to be able to give you all a special animated wallpaper of the illustration. This will be sent out to you sometime next week (also through BackerKit).

Physical Copies

To keep you in the loop, the physical copies of the art book will take some time, as we'll be going through a physical print approval process with the printer as well as the manufacturing process itself, freighting from China to the United States, and finally shipment out to you.

The plan, once we receive the books here in the USA, will be to ship them out in batches. We'll focus on domestic (USA) orders first and work our way through to the international orders at the end.

I don't currently have the timeline for all of this yet, but I will let you know as I have more information.

In the meantime, be on the lookout for that email from BackerKit with links to your digital Kaladin album Art Book and/or Bonus Wallpaper early next week!

All the best,

Michael

Kaladin Art Book: Sketch to Artwork, pt. 4
almost 3 years ago – Tue, Jun 08, 2021 at 03:32:45 PM

Hi all!

I hope you are all well.

It's been a minute since we have last posted. We're working our way through the last few items of revision and hope to have a good update for you on all of that soon.

In the meantime, we wanted to share another great sketch -> artwork. This one comes from Caanan White, who provided us with a fantastic comic-style illustration for Thath from the Kaladin album.

Check this out!

Thath: sketch by Caanan White
Thath: illustration (portion) by Caanan White

I am absolutely excited to share this full piece with you! I just love the bold perspective and the fantastic level of tension in the piece, which I hope you can get a small sense of from this cutout.

We look forward to sharing more very, very soon!

All the best,

Michael and Petar

Kaladin Art Book: Sketch to Artwork, pt. 3
almost 3 years ago – Thu, May 06, 2021 at 02:51:24 AM

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all well!

While we continue to work through the revision process, here's another demonstration of sketch-to-finished-artwork. Today, we are highlighting Grant M. Hansen's fantastic piece which he has extended for us for the "Bridge Four Shield" track from the Kaladin album:

Grant M. Hansen - Bridge Four Shield sketch
Grant M. Hansen - Bridge Four Shield - bridgemen

I hope this one gives you a little sense of the variety of artwork the book will present while still seeking to maintain a great quality across the board.

By the way, I may have mentioned it before, but Grant was also the artist who provided the cover for the Kaladin album.

Well, that's all for now! Are there any particular pieces you are most excited to get your hands on? Let us know in the comments!

All the best,

The Team @ The Black Piper

Kaladin Art Book: In Review!!
about 3 years ago – Thu, Apr 29, 2021 at 08:58:53 PM

Hi all!

We hope you're doing well! We just wanted to drop a quick note to let you know where things are with the art book progress.

We hope you'll be pleased to hear that not only is all of the artwork completed, but so is the design and the text! Currently, the entire book in all of its 144 page glory is with Dragonsteel for review! We know they're busy over there, so we appreciate your patience as we go through the revision process with them.

I also want to mention that I've been getting quotes from printers. Nothing to report there yet, but we are preparing for that process now and will keep you updated.

In the meantime, don't worry - we'll keep sending you updates with artwork, so be on the lookout for those.

Until the next one!

The Team @ The Black Piper
